Sun status

Note: Light from the Sun takes approximately 8 minutes 20 seconds to reach Earth. If the Sun exploded, we would not know until that delay has passed.

How it works

1) Light is information

The electromagnetic signal (light) takes ~8m 20s to travel 1 astronomical unit (1 AU). Whatever happens on the Sun, Earth learns about it after that latency.

2) The observation window

From the moment the first visible-light photons arrive confirming an explosion, typical models estimate ~30 minutes before the worst high-energy radiation reaches Earth, and roughly 1–3 days before macroscopic debris arrives depending on trajectories.

3) Visualized

Scroll down to watch a speed-compressed photon travel from the Sun to Earth. The animation condenses ~8m20s into a few seconds so you can see the delay in real time.

Light travel ~8 minutes 20 seconds
Radiation arrival ~30 minutes after light (approx)
Debris ~1–3 days depending on trajectories
